Ask my kids where they want to go for something fun, and the first guess is always the mall, a byproduct of the extreme heat here most of the year. But every once in a while, going to the mall really does mean fun, and Kidzania at Dubai Mall is where they've finally learned the difference.

A quick honesty note: this experience was generously hosted by Kidzania. As always, everything I've written here reflects our actual experience, the good and the not-so-good.

A Pint-Sized City, Entirely Theirs

Kidzania is a scaled-down city packed with interactive experiences, all indoors. You get a boarding pass at the entrance, a KidZos check to cash at the bank, and a city map. The streets are cobblestone, the storefronts are kid height, and it's genuinely all about them. Parents are welcome to watch from outside, but you're not allowed into the actual experiences, the kids run the city themselves, guided by adult helpers called Zupervisors. Watching mine through the windows, clearly proud of doing something entirely on their own, was its own kind of fun.

Earning and Spending

Kids earn money performing jobs around the city, flying an Emirates plane, starring on a TV set, then choose how to spend it on other experiences, like getting a driver's license or baking cookies in a factory. I love the built-in lesson of producers versus consumers, and the reminder that you work to earn the fun stuff. Along the way, they're picking up role play, socialization, teamwork, self-esteem, and respect in ways a classroom just can't replicate. I actually brought my own students here once for a unit on money, and it worked beautifully.

Safety and the Fine Print

Every person entering gets a chipped RFID bracelet. When it's time to leave, every band gets scanned to confirm the child leaving with you is actually yours. You can even leave your kids there unsupervised if you choose, you'll still get wristbands to make sure only you can collect them. There's also Pronto, an adults-only lounge where the sounds of Kidzania fade away for a few quiet minutes.

It might be tempting to drop the kids off and go enjoy some mall time alone, but I'd actually recommend going in and just watching. Six hours of observing my kids explore, discover, and chase their own interests taught me more about them than I expected.

Coming back to update: Kidzania Dubai is still open at Dubai Mall, still built around the same role-play city concept with 40+ professions to try, and now covers a slightly wider age range than when we visited, kids 4 to 16.
