Expat Travel Mom

Travel back in time, where the history of the Ottoman Empire meets contemporary, luxurious design. Deep blues and terracotta reds mix with gold and copper accents throughout a 19th-century Ottoman palace overlooking the Bosphorus. Located in the Beşiktaş neighborhood, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus put us close to nearly everything worth seeing.

A quick honesty note: this stay was generously hosted by the hotel. As always, everything I've written here reflects our actual experience, the good and the not-so-good.

Arrival

The courtyard alone, filled with red flowers and framed by the old palace, takes your breath away before you even step inside. Every staff member greeted each of us, kids included, with a genuine hello. At check-in, our kids got their own five-star treatment, choosing a welcome toy from a basket and having their photo taken for a special card tied to a pilot loyalty program, earning them an upgrade on future stays. This visit, it meant a free drink of their choice by the pool.

The Room

Every detail in the architecture and color palette kept the building feeling just as elegant as it must have looked in its original glory days. Our room was sophisticated but comfortable, a plush king bed, a soft color palette, and a window seat lounge overlooking the grand entrance and courtyard, I could have sat there for hours. The marble bathroom, with its oversized tub and L'Occitane products, eventually won me over instead.

Attention to Detail

Our connecting kids' room was just as exquisite, three beds dressed in fun, child-friendly linens, each with its own welcome gift and personal note, plus a tray of cookies and milk waiting after a long travel day. Over the next two days, they'd return to the room to find new treats and fresh linens each time. They were even invited to a private "meeting" over lemonade to share their likes and suggestions for the rest of the stay, genuinely making them feel as important as the parents. The kids' room service menu was healthy, plentiful, and reasonably priced too.

Five-Star Everything

Aqua restaurant serves a fabulous breakfast, and between the outdoor pool and spa overlooking the Bosphorus, the indoor pool with its skylight, the fitness center, and full spa services, there's very little this hotel doesn't offer. When we needed motion sickness medicine for our daughter ahead of a Bosphorus cruise, the concierge had it delivered first thing the next morning. That's five-star service.

What's Nearby

It would have been easy to never leave, one spa treatment blending into the next, but we ventured out to Dolmabahçe Palace, the Maritime Museum, the Beşiktaş tour boat area, and the charming village of Ortaköy, which quickly became my favorite spot in the whole city.

The Four Seasons made a genuine point of welcoming us into their family, evident by my daughter's tearful goodbye as we pulled away in the taxi. Far more than a romantic adults-only destination, this is a place that welcomes the whole family.
