Each winter, the Emirate of Sharjah lights up nightly in color for the Sharjah Light Festival, government buildings, historic architecture, and pretty much anything else standing, spread across a dozen locations throughout the emirate, a genuine paradise for kids and photographers alike. It's really pretty and really worth taking time to head out and experience what it's all about. The kids loved it.

A City Transformed

Sharjah doesn't look like Sharjah once the lights and projections take over. The whole place gets redecorated, essentially. The festival runs under the vision of the emirate's ruler, and the idea behind it has always been to shine a light, literally, on Sharjah's rich culture and heritage, highlighting the history and monuments woven through the city. It was the first festival of its kind in the Middle East, and hundreds of thousands of people make their way here every year to see it. Imaginations get tested, creativity gets sparked, this is the kind of event that's easy to underestimate until you've actually walked through it.

The Story Behind the Lights

Every year features a new roster of international artists and performers, telling Sharjah's story of heritage and architecture through light. It's genuinely one of those UAE cultural events that flies under the radar for a lot of people, even those living here.

Coming back to update: the Sharjah Light Festival is not only still running, it's thriving, now in its 15th year, spanning 13 landmarks across the emirate plus a dedicated Light Village with food, shopping, and interactive installations, drawing over 800,000 visitors in its most recent edition. It typically runs in early February each year, so worth checking current dates before planning a visit.
